Still not convinced that cannabis can enhance sex? That’s okay. We can take things slow.
Cannabis legalization is popping up all over the country. This benefits academia because it’s finally allowing more and more research to be conducted. We’re learning more about the effects of cannabis in a general sense, and its impact on sexual experience.
In the ancient Ayurvedic system of medicine, cannabis was used as a decongestant, as a sleep-aid an astringent, as soothing, an anesthetic for surgical operations, and as capable of stimulating appetite and promoting digestion. Most importantly, cannabis was considered to have aphrodisiac properties and was recommended for this purpose.
In November 2017, there was a study conducted called Association Between Marijuana Use and Sexual Frequency in the United States: A Population-Based Study. The study’s goal was to “Elucidate whether a relation between marijuana use and sexual frequency exists using a nationally representative sample of reproductive-age men and women.”
It’s about time, am I right?!
So, the study welcomed 28,176 women and 22,943 men as participants in this nationwide survey. They were surveyed by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) with an in-depth questionnaire.
The eye-opening results of this study showed that “Marijuana use is independently associated with sexual frequency and does not appear to impair sexual function.” More good news – daily cannabis users across all demographic groups reported having 20% more sex than their non-using counterparts.
And weed has never been sexier.
So sure, people might be having more sex, but what about the quality of the sex? Of the actual sexual experience?
There was another study conducted back in January 2017 called The Relationship Between Marijuana Use Prior to Sex and Sexual Function in Women. The goal of this study was to “determine if marijuana use before sex affects the sexual experience, by how much, and which domains of sexual function are affected.”
Now we’re getting somewhere.
This study polled 133 sexually-active adult women at one academic ObGyn practice during their annual check-ups. During these check-ups, they filled out lengthy in-depth questionnaires about their experience of using cannabis before sex.
Thirty-eight women (29%) shared that they consumed cannabis before sex. Of those 38, 68% reported more pleasurable sex. Among those women, 72% said that it always increased their erotic pleasure, and 24% said that it sometimes did. Almost 62% of these women said it enhanced the quality of their orgasms and their libidos.
Also, 16% of these participants disclosed that they smoke weed before sex specifically to relieve potential pain during sex.
“Consumption of small quantities [of cannabis[ prior to sex may increase libido in female patients, which in turn can release positive endorphins and increase vaginal lubrication.” Claims Dr. Monica Grover of Asira Medical, doubled Board certified in Family Medicine and Gynecology with multiple practices in New York.
Dr. Grover speculates that this may have something to do with the short-term anxiolytic of cannabis. Reduced sexual libido in women can typically correlate with any anxiety or stress that the woman is experiencing. So the short-term anxiety-relieving effects that cannabis can offer may be doing the trick.
And if you’re wondering about our guys, notable clinical implications among the male users in the first mentioned study were that cannabis does not impair sexual function nearly as much as alcohol does. They also found that that weren’t any contraindications of mixing cannabis with other drugs for sexual performance enhancement.
So, in conclusion, there needs to be a ton more research, but the outlook seems sexy!
In the meantime, find out for yourself why the strains above are among some of the best strains for sex, love, and pleasure.
